10 day course in Passive House design - Each course is a challenging and intensive course of instruction, and is aimed at qualified and motivated building professionals who have a passion to learn the art of Passive House design, the world’s leading standard in low‐energy, sustainable construction. Target Zero work in collaboration with the Passivhaus Institut in Germany, the world authority on this type of construction, and with the international Passive House community.

Building Envelope & Construction Techniques
General requirements, U-value calculations, Thermal bridge free design and calculations, Airtightness, Surface temperature calculations, Thermal comfort, Humidity and                 condensation, Detailing Examples & Case Studies, Summer overheating.

PHPP workshop - Simply the combination of components for a Passive House does not necessarily lead to a building that meets the requirements of the Passive House standard. Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is a key software that is used in the initial design phase to prove that a building meets the criteria for a Passive House. Participants in this workshop will learn the content and structure of PHPP and will gain practical experience working with it. The training is aimed at architects, engineers, consultants, and construction professionals who wish to gain further knowledge, experience & expertises of working with the Passive House Planning Package. Note: It is recommended that participants have the latest version of the PHPP software, however a version will be provided for the software training.

Revision and Exam Preparation –  Definition of a Passive House, Requirements for components, Design principles, Thermal bridges and airtightness, Building energy calculations, Heating/cooling/ventilation/domestic hot water concepts, Economic calculations, Construction management and defects assessments, PHPP plausibility test.

The IT Carlow campus is just 10 minutes walk from Carlow Town, one of Ireland’s largest inland towns situated on the banks of the River Barrow. Carlow is well serviced by road and rail links to major Irish cities and towns, and is approximately 80km from Dublin Airport.

By Road:
Carlow is on the main Dublin to Waterford N9 route, approximately one and a half hours drive from Dublin and an hour from Waterford. The Institute is located on the Kilkenny Road, a few minutes drive from Carlow town. The campus has ample car-parking facilities close to the reception area.

By Rail:
There are direct links between Carlow and Dublin, Waterford. The single journey between Carlow and Dublin takes approx. 1 hour. Carlow railway station is approx. 35 minutes (on foot) from the Institute.

What do I get from the course?

  • The Passivhaus Designer qualification is an internationally accredited by the Passivhaus Institut in Germany. On successful completion of the exam participants are listed on the Passivhaus Designer database where they will be awarded either Passivhaus Designer or Passivhaus Consultant certification, depending on qualifications. Delegates who wish to learn more about Passivhaus, or who wish to study a certain aspect in detail without taking the exam, are welcome to attend any of the individual modules or days that make up the course.
  • Participants of the course will receive over 800 pages of course study material along with access to a dropbox folder of further reference material.

What about the software?

  • A demo version of the PHPP is provided for the software workshop training. However it is advised for students to have a registered copy of the latest version. This can be purchased from the Passivhaus Institut.

What does the course comprise?

  • The total course comprises of 10 teaching days. Participants are then encouraged to take the exam for international accreditation. View the list of learning targets.

HOW DO I BECOME CERTIFIED ONCE IVE COMPLETED THE COURSE?

On completion of the course you have two routes available to becoming Certified by the Passivhaus Institut ‐ Firstly by passing the exam and secondly by way of submission of a Passive House Model Project (you must have credible proof that you have exercised full responsibility for the planning & design of the building). visit: www.passivhausplaner.eu/englisch/planer_werden.html for more information.

ARE THERE ANY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS COURSE?

Yes, the minimum entry requirement for this course is a diploma or degree in Built Environment related discipline along with experience.

WHERE CAN I DO THE EXAM?

Target Zero are an accredited exam body by the Passivhaus Institut in Germany and will hold exams at specific location on dates set by the Passivhaus Institut. International CPHD Exam Dates  app, ,June 14th, Oct 19th, Dec 6th,

HOW MUCH DOES THE EXAM COST?

The exam cost is €300 and goes towards correcting the exam and your certification for PHI.

WHAT HAPPENS THEN?

Students who successfully pass the exam (min 50%) will receive the title “Certified Passive House Designer / Consultant ” and their names will be entered in a registry in the website www.passivhausplaner.eu for a period of 5 years from the date of certification. The designer or consultant title will be based on your qualifications & experience. Your Certificate will be received about 6 weeks after completion of the exam.
